Tesla is set to receive a final environmental permit soon to build its first electric vehicle plant in Europe, Brandenburg Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke hopes. He stressed that he understands well the importance of the project, not only for the region, but also for the whole country.
Tesla plans to start production at Giga Berlin in July 2021. Currently, the company is building with preliminary permits for certain stages of construction. However, the most important final environmental approval from the state of Brandenburg is pending.
The Prime Minister of Brandenburg, Dietmar Woidke, hopes to receive approval for the construction in the near future, and emphasizes that a thorough examination of the necessary documents is currently underway. “I hope, of course, that the immission control permit can be issued and signed as soon as possible,” said Woidke to Deutschen Presse-Agentur. He stressed that this will happen after all the issues have been clarified, therefore he did not indicate the final date.
“That will be the case when all factual and technical questions have been clarified. I am the chief executive of all licensing authorities in Brandenburg, which also explains my reluctance to mention any dates.”
Woidke stressed that there is no pressure on the regulatory authorities. “We are well-advised to have the patience to process the individual procedural steps properly and, above all, not to do one thing: to exert political pressure in any way,” he said. “There is no Lex Tesla. The process must be legally secure.”
Woidke said that the authorities have worked hard, and have already done a great job because they know that Tesla is important not only for Brandenburg but for the whole country.
“Everyone knows that not only the region but the whole of Germany depends on this project.”
